Lufthansa will launch its first direct flights linking Frankfurt with Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in early 2008. The German airline will operate five weekly non-stop flights between the two cities from 28 March., as well as three weekly direct flights between Shenyang, Liaoning province, and Munich (via Seoul).

The new services extend Lufthansa’s Asia-Pacific gateways to 23. Swiss International Airlines, taken over by Lufthansa in 2005, is planning a new  Shanghai - Zurich route from May 2008.

Yu Cheng’an, Nanjing Airport General Manager, said the new Frankfurt flights are a milestone for the city, as its first passenger route to/from Europe. “The airport is estimated to handle eight million passengers in 2007, growing 29 per cent from last year,” Yu said.
