U.S.-made Drug Recalled in China
Almost 105,000 doses of a U.S.-made meningitis and pneumonia vaccine for
children have been recalled in China
due to sterilisation fears. Drug-maker Merck and its Chinese importer have
recalled the Hib vaccine due to a failure to assure sterility for all doses.
The drug was distributed in eight provinces, Tianjin,
Shandong, Zhejiang,
Fujian, Guangdong,
Hainan and Sichuan.
China Wants 500 “Top Innovative Firms”
by 2008
China is aiming to have 500 “top innovative firms” in key sectors, such as
natural resources, IT, biotechnology and environmental protection and
agriculture, by the end of 2008, state media reports. Li Xueyong, Vice Minister
of Science and Technology, said that China has taken steps to shift its
development base from resource and labour to technology and innovation, China
Daily reports. Under an ongoing trial programme, 184 companies were added last
week to boost China's
Technology Innovation Guidance Plan.
Huawei Largest Hajj Telecoms Supplier
Shenzhen-based Huawei Technology has become the largest telecoms services
supplier for the 2007 Hajj, the world’s largest annual religious pilgrimage,
according to state media. This is the third year that China’s largest telecoms equipment supplier has
been contracted in Saudi
Arabia to supply switch systems, base
stations and networks services for the Hajj.
China Plans 83,000 km Road Network
Main roads and highways now reach more than 90 per cent of China’s 1.3
billion people, state media reports. China currently has 53,000km of
highways, the second-highest in the world. By 2010, China
says that every village in western China will be accessible by road,
and by 2020 it aims to have a total national trunk road system of 85,000km. In
the same report, state media confirmed that of China’s 661 cities, 78 have a
population of 500,000 or more.
