China's planned RMB200bn, 1,318 km Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail link is set to begin construction following the awarding of an initial six engineering contracts, totalling RMB83.7 bn. The railway, claimed to be China's largest single investment in infrastructure, is scheduled to be completed in 2013, and will cut travel time between Shanghai and Beijing from 12 to five hours.
Chief beneficiary of the contract announcement, made by the Ministry of
Railways, was China Railway Construction Co., which will assume 40 per
cent of the total contract value of the project. Two CRCC's subsidiary
companies won two other sections of the project, while two divisions of
the China Railway Group won two sections and Sino-Hydro Corp and China
Communications Construction will carry out the remaining contracts.
The trains are expected to travel at up to 350 km per hour, with 21 stop-off stations scheduled along the route.
