A container-laden train from Beijing destined for Hamburg - via Mongolia, the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Belarus and Poland – departed on Tuesday, on a 10,000km journey slated to take around twenty days.
The trip represents a test for the so-called Eurasian Land Bridge,
created through cooperation between Deutsche Bahn, Russian and Chinese
Railways, and the national railroads of Mongolia, Poland and Belarus.
The six rail companies intend to develop the Beijing-Europe route as a
viable competitor to ocean and airfreight.
Norbert Bensel, from Deutsche Bahn’s management board, says the 15 to
18 days future journey time is twice as fast as a seagoing vessel from
Germany to China – and the freight route by land is considered to be
cheaper. He conceded, however, that certain details need addressing,
such as vehicle technology and customs formalities at the borders en
route.
