Less than a week before India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh makes his first official visit to China, the Indian Embassy in Beijing opened a new Indian visa application centre, according to The Hindu newspaper website.

The visa centre will be run by a private company, VFS Global Services, part of Kuoni Travel Group's India branch, and is a response to growing demand for India visas. The Hindu quotes the Indian Ambassador to China, Nirupama Rao, as saying that 51,473 visas were issued by the Beijing embassy in 2007, up from 36,150 in 2006.

Official business and tourism exchanges between the two nations are expected to increase. Last August, the China National Tourism Administration opened its first office in India, and an India Tourism office in is expected to open soon in Beijing. Twelve new visa application centres will be opened in Chinese cities this year.
