China Bans Free Plastic Bags
A ban will be placed on the free use of ultra-thin shopping bags from 1 June 2008. Supermarkets and shops will be prohibited to give away plastic bags for free. According to a circular on the central government's website, the measures will encourage shoppers to use fewer plastic bags – which totals 450 tonnes of plastic bags each week. It is expected that supermarkets will be free to determine the cost shoppers have to pay for new bags.

Changsha Becomes 13th Approved Outsourcing City
Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, has become the 13th city in China to be granted official status as a base for service outsourcing. The city will now be eligible for state funds, including financial support for personnel training. Last year, the province generated RMB12 bn from its software industry. The other approved service outsourcing bases are: Dalian, Shanghai, Xi'an, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Beijing, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Nanjing, Wuhan, Jinan and Hefei.
