The U.S. National Basketball association has teamed up with five Chinese and U.S companies – the Li Ka-shing Foundation, ESPN, Bank of China, Legend Holdings Ltd and China Merchants Investments – to create an expanded NBA China league. Together, the five partners will invest USD253m to acquire 11 per cent of the preference shares in NBA China.
The new company will conduct the NBA league's China operations,
including merchandising and the marketing of TV and media rights. NBA
Commissioner David Stern said the five investors will enable the NBA to
continue working with China’s General Administration of Sports and the
Chinese Basketball Association to extend its franchise in China.
The NBA – the first American sports league to stage matches in China,
back in 2004 – has relationships with 51 Chinese television
broadcasters, including the national network, CCTV, and 16 marketing
partnerships with Chinese corporations and U.S.-based multinationals.
