Chinese architecture, fashion and design will be the subjects of the London V&A Museum’s Spring Exhibition. Running from 15 March to 30 July, the China Design Now exhibition is touted as an exploration of “the impact of rapid economic development on architecture and design in China’s major cities. The stated goal is to “capture a dynamic phase as China opens up to global influences and responds to the hopes and dreams of its new urban middle class.”
Exhibits will range from China’s experimental new architectural
designs, including Foster & Partners Capital Airport extension in
Beijing; the China Central Television HQ by Rem Koolhaas and Ole
Scheeren; and projects by China’s leading young architects – including
Ma Yansong, Wang Hui, as well as urban graphic design; products aimed
at China’s design conscious youth and “the recent wave of creative
consumer and lifestyle magazines.”
The show will also feature some of China’s top fashion designers,
including the newest creations by New York and Shanghai-based Han Feng
– who designed the costumes for Anthony Minghella’s recent stage
adaptation of Madame Butterfly; haute couturier Lu Kun – whose Shanghai
studio was patronised last November by Paris Hilton; Ma Ke; Wang Yiyang
and Zhang Da.
