The worsening icy weather conditions in several provinces has severely impacted China's electricity supply. Some five per cent of the nation's coal-fired power plants were forcibly closed due to heavy snow falls, which forced 13 provinces to restrict electricity distribution to households and companies.

State media reports that the five largest electricity producers have shut 90 power stations in several provinces across northern and central China. This measure comes as millions of people prepare for cross-country travels for the Lunar New Year holiday, and heavy snow falls have led to mounting transportation delays. The resulting lack of coal forced 13 eastern and southern provinces, including Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hubei, Sichuan and Tibet, to ration energy usage.
