Spreadtrum Buys U.S.-Based Quorum
China's Spreadtrum Communications has acquired U.S. semiconductor
producer Quorum Systems for USD70m, according to a joint statement.
Spreadtrum paid USD55m in cash and USD15m in stock. The acquisition
enables the Chinese company to strengthen its position in the 2G, 3G,
RF, baseband, physical layer software and wireless applications
markets. Spreadtrum has developed its solutions on an open development
platform, enabling its customers to develop customised wireless
products. Quorum Systems is a fabless semiconductor company that
develops highly integrated CMOS radio frequency transceivers.
Yuncheng Plate Making Invests in U.S. Plant
Shanxi-based American Yuncheng Plate Making Inc. will set up a USD10m,
30,000 square feet plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It will use
the site to manufacture engraved printed cylinders for packaging,
decoration and textile transfers. According to a spokeswoman, Yuncheng
chose South Carolina because of its low tax rates and access to key
markets.
Honeywell Joins Sinopec and McDonalds JV
Honeywell has agreed to join a service station venture, set up last
year by Sinopec and McDonalds, which provides drive-through fast food
restaurants at gas service stations in China. The restaurants also
offer free Internet access and a playground for children, while
Honeywell will add "car beauty and maintenance services." The first gas
station with all three companies participating will be located in
Beijing's Haidian District.
