Two construction workers died last year, and one in 2006, while constructing Beijing's 2008 Olympic Stadium, Ding Zhenkuan, a Beijing Municipal Work Safety Bureau official has confirmed. The 91,000-seat, USD400m stadium, nicknamed the 'Bird's Nest,' was designed by Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron, and is the centrepiece of Beijing's portfolio of experimental architecture being finalised before the Games begin in August. It will host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics and football during the Games.
"We investigated the accidents and properly compensated the families
with the guidance of national standards," Ding told a press conference
in Beijing. "People who were responsible for the accidents have been
punished." Last week, Britain's The Sunday Times reported that since
construction of the "Bird's Nest" started in 2003, at least 10 workers
had died.
The construction of the Beijing Olympic venues will cost around
RMB13bn, Beijing Vice Mayor Chen Gang told the press conference, of
which the Bird's Nest is estimated to cost RMB3.5bn.
