Just a few days after Hong Kong announced its forthcoming Art HK 08 international art fair, Shanghai is fighting back. The second coming of its ShContemporary art exhibition – which it grandly calls “the leading international art fair of the Asia-Pacific region” – will take place from 10-13 September, according to a press release.
Last year’s inaugural ShContemporary was largely well received by
collectors and art houses, and 130 invited galleries from across
Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe have confirmed their
participation in 2008. The show is, according to organizers, “the only
international art show that provides a comprehensive, top quality,
overview of the artistic scene in Asia and creates a cultural crossover
with the works of Western artists.” We can hear the teeth grinding over
at Art HK 08.
All is far from rosy, however, The ShContemporary press release alludes
mystically to the “controversy regarding last year’s art director
Pierre Huber.” This controversy relates to something of an arthouse
hullabaloo, with accusations flying about Huber’s conflicting
activities as an art dealer and art fair director. Huber is embroiled
in a legal battle regarding the alleged deception of artists and
dealers about works supposedly being collected for a museum, but which
he subsequently auctioned at Christies in March last year.
Consequently, Huber is not directing this year’s Shanghai event.
