Two Chinese companies - Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co., and Suzhou Textiles, Silk, Light industrial Products, Arts & Crafts - and a U.S. importer have been indicted for defrauding and misleading U.S. manufacturers following a pet food poisoning scare in spring 2007. The indictments follow an investigation by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration into tainted wheat gluten that killed 16 dogs and cats and sickened thousands more, leading to the largest pet food recall in U.S. history.
The tainted wheat gluten contained traces of melamine, commonly used in
industrial products such as fertilisers, glues and inks, and can be
toxic when ingested. The tainted pet food products were shipped to the
United States between November 2006 and February 2007. It is thought
that more than 800 metric tonnes of the products were exported, with
products falsely labelled.
The indictments call for fines and prison sentences for executives at
the two Chinese companies, though the possibility of their extradition
remains unclear.
