Shanghai has applied to China's central government for approval to develop a Disney theme park, most likely to be built in Pudong, according to the city's mayor, Han Zheng.
"We have applied to the National Development and Reform Commission, but
so far we haven't received notice of approval," Han said during
China's 11th National People's Congress in Beijing. "Any big-scale
project of this kind has to have central government approval, and
Shanghai will abide by the central government's decision."
As we reported earlier, it now seems likely that Shanghai
Disneyland will be built in Pudong, despite persistent speculation that
the preferred site was on nearby Chongming Island. Mayor Han reiterated
that "the best choice is Pudong", although officials say no specific
location has yet been chosen. If the Shanghai theme park is approved,
it would be the third Disneyland to open in Asia, following Tokyo and
Hong Kong.
