China says it is "unfair and unscientific" to criticise the country for its high pollution emissions. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in a press conference that China's per capita emissions are less than a third of the levels in developed countries.

He called on the United States and other developed nations to invest heavily to fight climate change and cut emissions by 25-40 per cent of 1990 levels by 2020, state media reports. Last year, China passed the United States tobecome the world's largest source of carbon dioxide gas from burning fossil fuels and cement, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency revealed last year.

Minister Yang's comments came the day after the announcement by world marathon record holder Haile Gebrselassie, who is an asthma sufferer, that he is opting out of the Beijing Olympic Marathon because of pollution-related health fears.
