A new exhibition was unveiled at the Shanghai Urban Planning Centre in People's Square to mark the 1000-day countdown to the 2010 World Expo, to be held in the city. The exhibition - which charts the history of World Expos since the inaugural show in London in 1851 - will be open for one month, before embarking on a China roadshow tour, visiting Beijing, Chongqing, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou.
Shanghai was awarded the right to host the 2010 Expo, after ferocious lobbying on its behalf from multinational organisations with business interests in China, at the General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions in Monaco in December 2002. The site for the Expo - which will open on 1 May 2010, and will run for 6 months - began construction in June this year.
