Wal-Mart Stores Inc. requires its Chinese suppliers to meet certain environmental standards, CEO H. Lee Scott said during his visit to China.

The world's biggest retailer has about 1,000 Chinese suppliers. Scott said they will have to reduce emissions, improve waste disposal, work on their energy efficiency and packing if they want to be considered by Wal-Mart in the future.

The retailer plans to buy goods worth USD9 bn from China this year. In 2006, the company released 20.4 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions. Wal-Mart said it wants to generate all its power from renewable sources under its green development program in the long-term.
