China's 550 million mobile phone users can now backup their phone
address books following the announcement of a unified mobile phone
data and exchange file format.
China's Ministry of Information Industry says it has completed two
industry standards for mobile phone data formatting and file
exchanging. To transfer telephone directories, mobile phones must have
a green Universal Data Exchange tag affixed, and a yellow UDX tag needs
to be affixed before copying the telephone directory to a computer.
According to official statistics, China had 550 million mobile phone
users the end of January. The new standards are partly aimed at
stemming the rate of replacement of mobile handsets in China, which
runs to around 100 million mobile phones each year.
