Gas And Diesel Shortages Hit Beijing and Shanghai PDF Print E-mail

gas_shortage.jpgShortfalls in gas and diesel are spreading to Beijing, Shanghai and other key cities as filling stations struggle to get shipments from refiners.

Several stations surveyed in Beijing and Shanghai by AP have not received their expected shipments. Chinese media says that "most privately held petrol stations in Shanghai have run out of diesel and some have even shut down diesel refueling machines". The shortages occurred first in Guangdong province before spreading east and north. Shanghai has enough diesel for around 10 days, according to a statement on the municipal Economic Commission's website.

China's main oil producers, Sinopec and PetroChina, have been forced to sell their products at a much lower price in China market than they do on the international market. Last year, a similar shortage occurred and was remedied only when the government ordered an increase in the price for gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel oil by RMB500 per tonne.
