China Mobile yesterday announced the official rates for 3G telecoms services, which begin a trial run in eight cities on Tuesday. The test run is "expected to accelerate the process of the long-awaited 3G license issuances in China," according to state media.

The eight trial cities are: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Qinhuangdao, Shenyang, Tianjin and Xiamen – all of which will host Olympic events this summer. Mobile phone users will be able to subscribe to the TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) format services if they have a phone number starting with 157. The 3G phones will cost between RMB2,000 and to RMB4,000.

Based on a RMB50 monthly fee, each call with TD-SCDMA phones will cost users RMB0.40 per minute. The 30-megabyte data services cost RMB10 per Packages are available ranging from RMB28 for 150 minutes, to RMB88 600 minutes.
