The Ministry of Information Industry will issue 'relevant technical standards' for SMS management in China soon, local media report. Short messages have hit 17 billion during the last Spring Festival alone while spam SMS are making up a big part of it.
The new management rules will provide an overview on SMS services and
give users and mobile communications operators suggestions how to deal
and restrict spam messages. Statistics show that per day, roughly 250
million spam SMS are sent out in China. The Ministry of Information
Industry said it will lay out a legal framework to fight spam messages.
China Unicom already launched a service in Shanghai and Sichuan
province that allows users to label SMS senders on black and white
lists.
In March, Cellular-News.com reported that one company alone is
responsible for up to 80 per cent of all spam SMS in China. Focus
Wireless, a subsidiary of US listed Focus Media and other branches of
this company, have sent 200 million SMS per day. According to the
Beijing Morning Post, Focus Wireless has been reported to have had its
operating license revoked.
