Taiwan's aviation officials have picked out Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen for new direct weekend flights, which could begin this summer, according to a Taiwanese press report. The announcement comes after the Kuomintang election victory in Taiwan, and the slated ending of the five-decade ban on regular direct flights between Taiwan and mainland China.
China seems set to give the go-ahead for direct charter flights from
Taiwan to the three most commercially important mainland cities:
Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, as well as to Xiamen, which is located
very close to the island of Taiwan and has a large Taiwanese community
and trade links. The flights are reportedly set to start on 1 July.
