Mozzarella Cheese Banned in China
China has banned Mozzarella chees imports after tests in Italy showed
that some cheese products were tainted with a cancer-causing dioxin.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and
Quarantine said in a statement that importers must immediately stop
selling the cheese and start a recall. All other Italian-made cheese
products must undergo laboratory tests.
Nanjing Aims to Rival Pudong & Binhai Economic Zones
The Nanjing government has said it plans to build a new economic zone
that will rival Shanghai's Pudong and Tianjin's Binhai. Zhu Shanlu, the
local Communist Party Chief, said Nanjing will unveil its detailed
plans at the end of this year. The capital city of eastern province
Jiangsu province - and the national capital during the Republican era -
Nanjing's strategic inland location has already drawn considerable
foreign investment, particulary to its new pharmaceutical and
petrochemical parks. No investment details for the new zone have yet
been disclosed.
China Media Sales Given Upward Target
A new report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences predicts that
the country's media industry will grow in aggregate revenue value to
RMB554 bn this year, an increase of 13.1 per cent on 2007. Book
publications comprise one-fifth of sales, totalling RMB110 bn, with
mobile and new media sales fast catching up, at a value of RMB105.3 bn
last year. The report projects that the mobile media market will grow
to RMB124.9 bn this year, though no statistics were provided to
underpin this prediction.
China Agrees to Milk Price Increases
The National Development and Reform Commission approved the price rises
for Bright Dairy, China's third-largest dairy producer, and
Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group. Prices for fresh milk and ultra high
temperature milk (UHT) will increase by up to 14 per cent in certain
regions, the commission said. Since January, producers of daily
necessities need government approval to increase consumer prices.
