Volkswagen AG’s car venture in Shanghai is considering taking over Fiat plant in east China, as it increases capacity in the fast growing market.
Shanghai Volkswagen, the company's venture with China's top car maker,
SAIC Motor, needs to add production capacity to meet brisk demand, a
Volkswagen spokesman in China said. According to Reuters, the plant had
an annual production capacity of 60,000 vehicles a year, which would
increase to 100,000 by 2010. Shanghai Volkswagen's current annual
capacity is 500,000 units.
Fiat has agreed to sell the Nanjing plant in east China to the
country’s top car maker, SAIC Motor, however the venture has not signed
any agreement to take over the plant. Spokesperson for Volkswagen in
China was quoted as saying that there are several options and that
Nanjing was only one of them.
