China’s planned food-tracking system rule, which is awaiting government endorsement, is facing opposition from International and Chinese food and beverage companies.

The tracking system requires companies to put an electronic identification code to every single package, which will raise costs to consumers, and companies fear that it will be damaging to their business. The idea behind the tracking system is to improve product safety, but if the country’s goal is to lower inflation, the tracking system may conflict with that goal.

Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods Inc, Hangzhou Wahaha Group Co and Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group are among those against the tracking system.
