satellite_tv_crackdown.jpgA campaign, joined by the city’s law enforcers, to eradicate illegal television satellites that can receive international TV programs, is currently underway.

Residential areas will be a major target for this year’s campaign as it is estimated that more than 30,000 homes are equipped with illegal satellite television. Property companies have been given bilingual notices of the movement and many foreigners have complied by removing their satellites, state media report.

The spokesperson for the campaign office, Deng Ying, said that while they hope owners will dismantle their satellites voluntarily, force can be used if owners do not comply. Only selected government departments and hotels with more than three stars, where more than 80 percent of its residents are foreigners, are allowed to install satellite television.
