The next five years could see an increase of as many as 500 Papa John’s restaurants in China, making it its biggest market outside the US.

There are currently 100 Papa John’s restaurants in China and this year it plans to launch 40 to 50 more. Along with its US competitors, Pizza Hut and McDonalds, Papa John’s is hoping China’s billion yuan fast-food market could counterbalance idle sales at home.

Media reports that Papa John's expansion will be mainly through franchises in China as it seeks to catch up with Yum Brands Inc's Pizza Hut, which already owns over 350 outlets in the country. Although skeptical at first, Papa John’s management is now convinced that China is the fastest-growing pizza market in the world.
