The multi-billion-yuan Shanghai Post International Cruise Terminal (SIPG) will officially open on 5 August 2008. The new terminal, located in the North Bund area of the city on the Huangpu River, is designed to fulfil Shanghai's ambition of becoming a major Asian cruise hub.

MSC Cruises, a key investor in the terminal, will make SIPG its Asian hub and plans to launch several new Asian cruise routes following the terminal opening. MSC, which sails principally in Europe and South America, has formed a joint venture with SIPG, called MSC Cruises Travel Agency (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. and will work to educate the local tourist market on "understanding the cruising lifestyle," according to a company statement. This includes setting up a 6,000 sq m Cruise Centre to "promote the cruising concept."

The new SIPG Terminal will have occupy an 800-metre waterfront space, with a total land area of 130,000 square meters.
