Although China committed itself to a "smoke-free Olympics" when it was awarded the 2008 Games back in 2001, officials now say that a complete ban is impossible.

A soft version of the ban will take effect on 1 May, when new regulations will make it illegal to smoke in sports venues, parks, public transportation and schools. Hotels are being asked to provide non-smoking rooms or entire floors and restaurants are being asked to have designated smoking zones.

China has the world's largest smoking population: it is estimated that around 360 million people, or one third of the world's smokers, live in the country.
