Shanghai authorities have expelled billboard advertising in China’s commercial hub without prior clarification, leaving companies baffled and outraged.
It is reported that authorities usually advise companies of such
decisions two to three months in advance, but this time it has left
advertising firms only with guesswork. Some companies are assuming that
the authorities might be concerned about possible harm the billboards
may do to the city’s image ahead of the Olympic Games, but Shanghai
Advertising Association director is quoted as saying that “this does
not mean the ban is legally justifiable. It has hindered us from
scheduling our projects."
Authorities in Beijing last year launched a clean-up on billboards
promoting luxury housing, concerned they would cause upset among less
wealthy residents.
