The U.S. State Department has issued a Travel Alert for American citizens regarding security issues in China. The warning – which covers the Olympic period and will run until 31 October – advises Americans travelling or residing in China to be alert to their surroundings and exercise caution at all times.
The move follows China’s crackdown on entry for foreign visitors, which
it says was precipitated by security concerns ahead of the Olympic
Games in Beijing this August.
According to the U.S. Travel Alert, Chinese authorities have increased
security at China's airports in recent months. It adds that:
“Any large-scale public event such as the upcoming Olympic Games may
present an attractive target for terrorists. There is a heightened risk
that extremist groups will conduct terrorist acts within China in the
near future. In light of these security concerns, U.S. citizens
travelling in China are advised to use caution and to be alert to their
surroundings at all times, including at hotels, in restaurants, on
public transportation and where there are demonstrations and other
large-scale public gatherings.”
