zagat_guide.jpgNew York-based Zagat Survey has released its second guide to Shanghai’s best restaurants and hotels. The stand-alone 2008 pocket-sized guide to Shanghai also forms part of a three-city guide, called Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing Restaurants & Hotels – which will be released next week. This is the first time that Zagat has released guide content for Hong Kong and Beijing.

Based on the collective opinions of 2,037 surveyors, the three-city English-language guide has ratings and reviews for 618 restaurants and 106 hotels, of which 208 restaurants and 35 hotels are in Shanghai.

“This is perhaps one of the world’s fastest growing cities,” said Tim Zagat, CEO of Zagat Survey, at the Shanghai book launch. “Not surprisingly, restaurants and hotels have kept pace with diverse and worldly new offerings for consumers.”

Husband-and-wife team Nina and Tim Zagat were also in Shanghai to talk with potential Chinese publishing partners. “We would like to start surveying and also publishing our guides in Chinese in future, and are looking for a Chinese company to work,” said Tim Zagat. He also announced that the company is planning to launch nightlife, shopping and entertainment surveys in China.

The results of the 2008 Zagat Shanghai survey were:

Top Food: 1) Hanagatami; 2) Guyi Hunan; 3) Vedas; 4) Jean Georges; 5) Din Tai Fung

Top Hotel: 1) Four Seasons; 2) St Regis; 3) Pudong Shangri-La; 4) Grand Hyatt; 5) Portman Ritz-Carlton
