Another in the latest of mysterious bans by the Chinese government is the restriction of entry from Hong Kong to the mainland, which has sparked confusion and frustration among Hong Kong based business travelers.

Instead, the Chinese Embassy in Hong Kong is granting only 2 day visas, for only one city or province at a time. Applicants are asked to hand over return flight tickets and hotel vouchers, making traveling to the mainland even for emergencies, impossible. Various Chambers of Commerce in Hong Kong have lodged complaints but no explanation has been given for the decision.

Media reports that Mainland business people are hurt, too. At Shenzhen's Luohu Commercial City, shopkeepers, whose sales have dropped to 50 per cent, say fewer foreign customers are showing up. "Before, we were so busy. We're not selling much anymore; by 5 or 6 p.m., we're just playing cards."

It is said that Beijing's security concerns over the Olympics are behind the new measures as well as China's concern about a potential Muslim terror threat.
