China's government has taken further steps to stop illegal wheat and rice exports as traders are attempting to smuggle grain to capitalize on record high global prices.
Customs officials in Hangzhou say they blocked four attempts in the
past few weeks that could have shipped approximately seven tons of rice
and 33 tons of wheat out of the country illegally.
Ningbo authorities confirmed that they prevented more than 130 tons of
wheat from being shipped out in four recent cases. In March, global
rice prices increased to their highest level in 19 years and wheat
prices soared to a 28-year high.
China's Ministry of Commerce has called for tightened control on grain
exports and a build-up of reserves of important agricultural products.
