Mainland residents wishing to attend Olympic events and lengthen their stay in Hong Kong and Macau must apply for a permit, which will allow them a stay of up to 90 days.

The application process, which is said to start next month, will give residents in Shandong, Guangdong, Hebei and Liaoning provinces the opportunity to apply by showing to the exit-entry customs, their household registration documents, identification cards as well as Olympic identity and accreditation cards. This also applies for residents of Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. Those living outside of their native provinces will need to submit their applications via the
local exit-entry administration under the Public Security Bureau, state media reports.

The permits are reported to expire on 23 September, and entry after this date will be denied. The Olympic identity and accreditation card is a personalised card given by the IOC, which bestows on its holder the right to attend the Olympic Games.
