Figures from the China National Tourism Association reveal that total tourism revenue (inbound and domestic) reached RMB1.9 trillion in 2007 - the first time it has surpassed the trillion yuan mark.

China welcomed some 131 million inbound visitors during 2007 (up from 124 million in 2006), including 54.72 million who stayed at least one night - representing increases of 5.5 and 9.6 per cent year on year. Of these 131 million visitors, about  26.11 million were classified as "foreigners", among them 16.07 million from Asia; 2.72 million from America; 6.21 million from Europe; 728,400 from Oceania and 379,100 from Africa.

The number of domestic tourist visits within China reached 1.61 billion in 2007, up 15.5 per cent - and domestic tourism revenue topped RMB777 billion, up 24.7 per cent.

Ten years previously, in 1997, China received 57.59 million inbound visitors and 644 million domestic tourism visits.
