The European Union in Brussels this week debated reasons why food prices were increasing worldwide and came to the conclusion that China and India were consuming more meat thus sending food prices up.
Media reports quote EU Commissioner for agriculture as saying “Those
who see bio-fuels as the driving force behind recent food price
increases have overlooked not just one elephant standing right in front
of them, but two."
The first elephant is refers to the dietary shift in China and India
towards meat consumption, both with large populations and is believed
to have a huge impact on commodity markets. The second is bad weather,
which has also had a negative impact on production and has sent food
prices soaring. The European Parliament is due to adopt a resolution on
rising food prices at its plenary session May 22.
