China Mobile has spent more than RMB14 bn so far to build a 3G mobile phone network based on a domestic technological format, the company says.

Wang Jianzhou, Chairman of China Mobile Communications and HongKong-listed China Mobile, said that the investment will allow his company to run a 3G mobile phone network based on Chinese TD-SCDMAtechnology. The 3G system runs with 14,300 base stations and is currently test operating in the eight cities to host Olympic events this summer.

Last month, China Mobile announced it has signed an agreement with Japan's Softbank and Vodafone to establish a joint venture innovation laboratory. The Chinese company will invest USD5m in the venture.
