China has reportedly banned sales of a soft drink made by Coca-Cola and two Pringles potato chip products by Procter & Gamble, due to fears that they may contain harmful substances.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and
Quarantine said that sales of Coca-Cola's berry-flavoured Fanta soft
drink have been suspended for containing too much benzoic acid, which
can be harmful to the liver and the kidneys, The Economic Times reports.
The government also announced that sales of two lines of Pringles
potato chips, the "spicy salad sauce" and the "crispy baked" flavours,
are suspended as tests showed they contained potassium bromate, a
chemical substance that may cause cancer.
China's quality control watchdog also announced on its website that 593 imported food items were "unfit for consumption".
