US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has cautioned that the current trend of economic nationalism in China and the United States is troubling and could endanger beneficial ties.

Foreign businesses have criticized Beijing for dishonestly favoring Chinese companies in its attempt to grow national champions and according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gutierrez, could trigger American protectionist sentiment. Media reports that some US lawmakers are requesting laws compelling disciplinary tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing keeps up this trend.

It is said that thus far China has invested just USD550 million in the United States, while U.S. companies have invested a total of USD22 billion in China. Gutierrez was in Beijing to meet his new Chinese equal, Chen Deming, to ease trade tensions.
