New Travel Weekly, a Chongqing-based newspaper, has reportedly been closed after it published a lascivious photo-shoot with bikini-clad women set against a background of destroyed buildings and rubble, according to many local websites.

The offending issue – published on 19 May, the first day of China’s official three-day mourning period for victims of the Sichuan earthquake – “was allegedly dedicated to the earthquake relief,” Danwei reports.

However, the photo spread caused widespread offence and the newspaper was accused of "violating journalistic ethics" in its earthquake reporting. The president and the chief editor were both fired, and the newspaper has issued an apology.
