China’s food export has made an upward trend reaching 6.591 million tons, illustrating active growth of 11.6 per cent year-on-year, totaling USD7.58 bn in value. ASEAN members, Hong Kong, the European Union and Japan were the major export markets, however food exports to Japan has seen a decline of 24.1 per cent.
It is interesting to note however that while the country’s food exports
increase, its food prices at home are soaring. But some Economists
still consider China a small exporter of food, saying that the country
exports mostly high value-added foods such as vegetables but that it
doesn’t export as much of its higher prices for pork to the rest of the
world. Thus deducing that a major factor in rising prices is demand,
not only because the population is increasing but as Chinese people
become more affluent, they can afford more food, and demand can go
nowhere but up.
Media reports that Shandong, Guangdong and Fujian provinces were the
top exporters in the nation. In addition, vegetable export volume
amounted to 1.437 million tons with an increase of 5.6 per cent, ranking No. 1
among the total food exports.
