- State media reports that the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has allocated RMB150m for emergency repair and reconstruction work of infrastructure that was damaged in the earthquake-hit areas in provinces of Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan and Chongqing Municipal City.

- The U.S. government says that visitor arrivals to the United States from South Korea, China and India grew by 9 per cent, 28 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively, in February - and 5 per cent, 31 per cent and 14 per cent so far in 2008.

- The municipal government of Guangzhou plans to put 700 more taxis on the roads this year to meet the increasing demand. 60,000 passengers a day.

- The Ministry of Finance announced that it would issue RMB28 bn (USD4 bn) worth of three-month book-entry treasury bonds next week.

 

- China dropped two places to 17th in the latest World Competitiveness Yearbook compiled by Swiss business school IMD.

- Centrally administered State-owned enterprises (SOEs) sustained losses of more than RMB30 bn (USD4.3 bn) in the May 12 earthquake, a senior official said yesterday.

- China's major power plants produced 1.09 trillion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity during the January to April period, up 14.1 per cent year-on-year, the China Electricity Council said.

- The United Nations has increased its emergency grant for earthquake relief efforts in China to USD8 mn, a UN spokesperson said.

- China's iron ore imports volume amounted to 42.85 million tons in April, representing a rise of 29 per cent compared with the same period of last year, according to statistics released by China's General Administration of Customs.

- By the end of April 2008, cellphone users in China had reached 583.5 million, increasing 8.9 million over last month, according to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information.
