Two people were confirmed dead and 480 others were injured after a 6.4 earthquake hit Qingchuan County in Sichuan province on Sunday afternoon. State media reports that the dead and injured were all in collapsed houses or landslides. Another injury was reported in Wenxian County, Gansu province.
The new earth shock was the strongest seismic reaction since the
8.0-magnitude earthquake of 12 May, which has so far killed more than
62,000 people. It struck at 4.21pm on Sunday and was felt across
Sichuan province, including the capital Chengdu. The tremor was also
felt in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, where citizens reportedly
fled homes and offices to seek shelter in open spaces.
Nearly 8,000 aftershocks have been reported in Sichuan province
following the 12 May earthquake. The death toll has reached 62,664 as of
Sunday.
