Quake Costs Industry and Miners USD29.5 bn
Losses from last month's earthquake in Sichuan province have caused losses of USD29.5 bn for industrial and mining firms, the State Council Information Office said. Statistics show that about 4,000 companies had resumed production and 1,500 remain suspended. The death toll from the quake has officially risen to 69,136, with 17,686 people still missing.

 

Beijing Bans Fireworks, Steps Up Olympic Controls
For a three-month period around the Olympic Games in August, Beijing will ban all  fireworks in the capital. The suspension of fireworks sale starts on 1 July and lasts until 8 October, state media reports. In addition, the purchase of toxic chemicals is controlled as businesses and individuals have to register with authorities. Warehouses, distributors and mines are being ordered report to the local safety watchdog on a weekly basis in July, and daily in August.
