The Chinese Public Security Bureau has ordered hotels and apartment management companies to uphold registration procedures for foreign guests, or face a fine. Failure to register a stay in China with the local police could cost up to RMB5,000 for all parties involved, including tourists.

Hotels and the management of serviced apartments need to register foreign visitors/residents within 24 hours of arrival with the Public Security Bureau. Foreigners who visit friends or live in a private apartment or house must register with the local police station within one day of arrival.

The regulations are not new but the recent re-posting of the guidelines indicates that the government will step up enforcement controls in coming months.
