traffic_pollution.jpgCivic Exchange, the Hong Kong based research institute, has estimated that air pollution is claiming 10,000 lives a year in Hong Kong, Macau and China’s Pearl River Delta.

The study which was carried out over a period of nine months by health, science and public policy specialists found that air pollution is setting their economy back USD964m per year. Respiratory diseases caused by smog are producing 440,000 hospital bed days and 11 million doctor visits, media reports.

Vehicle emissions in the region and pollution from industrial areas in neighbouring southern China are believed to have worsened the problem over the past ten years and it is reported that travelers are avoiding Hong Kong because of reports of premature deaths caused by smog.
