Microsoft and other foreign software companies are under investigation by the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office for potential "monopoly activities", state media reports.
The probe focuses on operating systems and software developed by
foreign companies which allegedly cost substantially more in China than
in the United States. Private Chinese companies are believed to
file lawsuits against Microsoft and other software firms, the Shanghai
Securities News reports.
The investigation and lawsuits come ahead of China's new anti-monopoly
law, which takes effect on 1 August. The paper quoted an unnamed source
as saying that "global software firms are taking advantage of their
monopoly situation [in China] and set unreasonably high prices...
Chinese government and companies have the obligation and right to
correct the situation".
China passed its first anti-monopoly law last year.
